Unsustainable Practices:
Overfishing is the practice of taking too many fish for the population of fish to sustain. If we take away too many fish, there won’t be enough adult fish left to breed and replace those that have been captured. We have reached this point with several species already! For this reason, we must also regulate the amount of fishing boats on our seas.
The choice of fishing equipment, and the development of less damaging methods of fishing is also very important. For example, some kinds of trawl nets – nets that are dragged through the water behind a fishing boat - are extremely damaging to the seabed, destroying coral reefs, and catching creatures which will later be discarded.
Activity:"Go to "Fish to Avoid" at www.fishonline.org, and find out which fish are endangered by our fishing activities. Choose three fish, draw them, and explain why they are we shouldn't be eating them. Give alternative fish which would be less damaging for us to eat." THEN..."go to"Fish to Eat" at www.fishonline.org and find out which fish are not endangered by commercial fishing. Choose three fish, draw them, and explain why we may eat them without endangering the species." |
