Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries

What is FishCode?

FishCode is a special programme of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) that helps countries and local communities follow the Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries. The Code of Conduct is an international agreement between the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, and 170 member countries. It was adopted in 1995.

The Code is voluntary – everybody agrees that it is a good idea to follow its guidelines because oceans, rivers, lakes and the fish and other aquatic life they contain are there for everyone. So it is in everybody’s interest to look after them!

WHAT DOES FishCode DO?

The FishCode Programme helps countries and people around the world to follow or implement the Code of Conduct through projects and activities to support better ways of using and protecting fish and aquatic resources so that they can continue to provide us with food and employment and recreation. Not just for now or the next few years, but for always. Responsible fisheries means sustainable fisheries.
