Salmon:  Oncorhyncus (family: Salmonidae)

Incredible Journeys:

shrimpySalmon are to be found in the rivers of many countries around the world – but only at certain times of year. This is because Salmon spend most of their lives at sea, only returning to freshwater rivers in order to reproduce.

No one quite knows how, but most of the Salmon spawning in a river will have been born in that river themselves. How these fish find their way back to one river from the open ocean is a mystery.

Salmon and us :

However, this habit of returning to rivers for spawning can be dangerous for the salmon as their successful reproduction relies on our good management of rivers and the environment in general.

Some Quick facts about salmon

  • The Chinook Salmon, (Oncorhyncus tshawytscha), is the largest species of salmon in North America. Adults can weigh up to almost 57 kg, or 125 lbs and be almost 60 inches, or 150 cm long!

  • Salmon are born, or spawned, in fresh water, but spend most of their lives at sea, only returning to rivers to reproduce.

  • Roughly 90% of salmon spawning in a stream will have been born there themselves!

  • Salmon have a strong sense of smell, which helps them navigate back from the ocean to the stream where they were born.

  • We can tell the age of a Salmon by counting the growth rings on their scales.
